The Art of Looking is a fascinating and provocative exhibition encouraging us to look more closely. This exhibition invites the visitor to slow down and spend time looking at artworks across two floors and four centuries, taking in paintings from the Dutch Golden Age to celebrated British artists from the 1920’s – 70’s. It is an impressive selection of works, many taken from the permanent collection, gifted to the museum by Baron de Ferrieres in 1898.

Considered together, all the paintings have one thing in common. They take the ordinary and turn it into something extraordinary. The humble still-life becomes abstracted, stylised, edgy. The portraits are intimate, sexy and decorative.
