Arts & Crafts Tour of Painswick. 31st July 2025 for Handmade in Painswick Gallery
Join Sarah on a tour of the pretty village of Painswick, its history and creative, colourful inhabitants, stopping off along the way to hear cultural tales and personal stories.
Walk in the footsteps of William Morris, who summered in the Cotswolds and the Pre-Raphaelites, who spent time together in this region. Stop outside the Ashton Beer Collection in the Methodist chapel with its important Morris & Co. window, discover Barron & Larcher, the pioneering textile designers of the 1930’s and visit their (once) studio in the heart of the village. Wander through the churchyard and notice the Arts & Crafts carvings on the war memorial and bath houses. Further along Vicarage Street is a house dedicated to Anne Howitt, a spiritual artist and contemporary of Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
The Cotswolds has been attracting artists and craftsmen for centuries, notably the Arts & Crafts movement in the mid-19th century. Important houses such as Hilles House in nearby Edge and Kelmscott Manor in Oxfordshire remind us of the relevance of the movement in contemporary society.
Painswick village, The Queen of the Cotswolds, is loved for its 99 yew trees, views across the Slad Valley and impressive church spire, signifying a town of wealthy wool merchants. Sarah will help to bring it to life with stories of a colourful past and an important place in art history.
